October 2006 Tribute Awards
On October 31 at the Annual Awards Meeting, Second Vice President Donna Nowak presented the following awards to outstanding members of our local clubs for their service to club, community and state:
Civic Development:
Civic duty has called this garden clubber to develop plantings at two post offices and the town volunteer park; to plant a tree at the fire department in honor of 9/11; to organize groups to pull invasive plants from the Mattabesset River, then re-plant the banks with appropriate plants; to work with the town manager to secure a permanent home where her club could work on their annual fund raiser to make wreaths and swags to sell at the Berlin Fair in October.

Attending the Landscape Design Study Program can be a life changing experience. She is now an extremely successful landscape designer based in West Hartford. For the past five years her hard work has made Landscape Design Study Program a most successful venture.
The little plans Regina drew
Improved our gardens through and through.
Whenever she walks through a spaceIt soon becomes a better place.
It would be nice if for the heck of it,
Regina'd redesign Connecticut.
Regina Neal - Green Bay Tree Garden Club
Youth:
This garden club youth chairman conducted a series of four workshops – pumpkin art, wreath design, building a plant person and learning how to dry and press flowers. Armed with their newfound knowledge of flower pressing, the children made a Junior Exhibit, by using the flowers and moss to form a Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City. Named "Wizard of Oz," the exhibit earned blue ribbons at the club flower show and the CT Flower and Garden Show.
Carol Dornbush - The Simsbury Garden Club
All-Around:
What an all-around person, serving her community and garden club by working on the Westport Beautification Committee, the Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival and chairing her club's maintenance work at the Atrium Wildflower Garden at Earthplace in Westport. Even while she wrote a monthly Horticulture column for the club newsletter, she served on the Plant Sale Committee. Overlapping some of this work were her garden therapy programs at Westport Health Care Center. Last but not least, she was also exhibiting design and horticulture at many flower shows-and winning many Blue Ribbons.
